I would definitely recommend finding some tutorials on YouTube! It was a HUGE help for learning all the different stitches and how to hold your hook and yarn, etc. I think visual learning is key for crocheting. Studio Crafti (
www.youtube.com/channel/UCNQDS…) is great because she not only has beginner tutorial but she also has full pattern tutorials as well for tons of cute amigurumi.
I would also recommend learning how to read patterns. There are so many free patterns online on Ravelry or AmigurumiPatterns.net that are great for beginners.
If you haven't already, learning the very basics of hand sewing is essential too.
As for supplies, for starters I would recommend buying:
- A hook (I usually go for a hook one size smaller than what the yarn recommends so the stitches are tight enough that the stuffing doesn't fall out)
- Yarn (you don't need to go for anything expensive. I use acrylic yarn because it's cheap and hypoallergenic. Red Heart and Caron Simply Soft are common brands in the US)
- Stuffing (polyester filling is my go to. I have also heard of people buying cheap pillow inserts and just using the stuffing from them)
- A yarn needle (you will need to sew parts together so having a needle is essential. Something with a large eye is best so it's easier to thread)
Optional:
- Safety eyes (only if you want to use them. You can also just stitch the eyes on or cut them from felt and glue them on)
- Felt (just cheap acrylic felt works. Good for doing small details or details that are too complicated to crochet)
- Fabric glue (dries flexible so you don't end up with hard spots in your work and won't fall apart if you need to wash your piece)
I think that's all the tips I have for getting started, but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask! ^^
